How do I replace a halyard in a Hunter 27?
I have a 1984 Hunter 27. The Jib halyard broke at the sheave and has fallen inside the mast and is stuck...somewhere! Any ideas on how to get it out and replace it? There are no nice slots in the mast to allow any type of access. Help!Home Depot sells a plumping device that can go fish it out. Or you pull a couple of feet on all the lines from the other direction in hopes one of them captures it and dislodges it. In any event, you're unlikely to get it back up over the sheeve, and so you'll have to go up top and snake a new one down with small fishing weights. Tedious but do-able.

It broke near the top sheave and fell into the mast. Where is the bitter end? I do not understand how the entire length of halyard got inside the mast. Would like to know in case it happens to me sometime. Or should I say 'when it happens'?
All the lines on my '77 h27 run outside the mast. Do yours run inside? My only suggestion is that taking down the mast is not that hard (typically a few hours for us) and that might make some of your troubleshooting easier (even if Ed and I can't picture it! David Lady Lillie

Once you are ready to install the new halyard, here is a suggestion that worked for us. Securely tie a 3 foot piece of bicycle chain to a piece of 1/8quot; line that is a little more than twice the deck to mast head sheaves. Send someone to the top of the mast is a bosuns chain and have them drop the chain over the appropriate mast head sheave and down the inside of the mast. You should be able to retrieve the chain by reaching in the slots at the base of the mast(use a needle nose pliers) and pulling through. Once you have the 1/8quot; line over the sheaves and both ends at the same point on deck, securely sew and tape the end of the new halyard to the end of the 1/8quot; line that is on the outside of the mast. Carefully pull the halyard up, over the sheave and out the base of the mast. Good luck.
They guy has internal halyards...my H-27 ('83) has them. Shackle end breaks and the sail falls, the remaining halyard drops into the mast, with the other end still coming out of the base of the mast. I never trash at least one stay when I change them, and thats my 'fish tape'. It has enough stiffness to be fed up or down the inside of the mast, its free and you can weave wire or lines into the end. Home depot gets enough of my money. Its not near the catastrophe it looks like at first! IslandJack
