windpilot

I'm the owner of a Hunter 356 builded in 2002 and based in Spain. I'm thinking about installing a windpilot on this boat. Does anyone have any idea about this matter? Greetings for everyone

they work great for extended off shore short handed passage making. No electrical power required. There are several brands to choose from. I was looking at the Cape Horn. Impractical if you're mostly doing local cruises or day sailing. A wheel mount or below decks electrical auto pilot does well for these applications. Terry

Are you referring to a self-steering wind vane or running your wind instruments to the auto pilot? I have the wind instruments connected to the auto pilot thru the seatalk bus and it works great. In either case I agree with Terry.

Hi Ken,  Hi Terry, thanks for your answers.I was talking about a steering wind vane. Some people here told me that this kind of pilot  doesn't work properly when you sail downwind in this kind of boat. (You known, her wide beam and aft) Causes would be lesser apparent wind and waves all the time pushing you to an accidental  gybe or  tack.  So, question could be: did anyone try a steering wind vane in this kind of boat?

model, but Karen Thorndike was the first woman to sail solo around the world in a 36 foot sloop. Most of her journey (1998-2000) was the southern hemisphere. I've attended three of her seminars and she speaks dearly of her steering wind vane in most all wind conditions and points of sail. Terry
