tach replacement on my C-30
I bought the boat in June. The previous owner told me he had replaced the tach, but it still didn't work and he didn't know what to do to fix it. I have tried adjusting the settings on the back of the tach, but nothing I've tried has worked. The PO had also replaced the alternator with a Prestolite model which seems to be working ok and charging the batteries properly. When I read the tach installation instructions to check the current installation, it stated that the number of poles in the alternator(I think it was poles(?) were needed to make the proper setting on the back of the tach. I inquired at the Prestolite website, but couldn't find any information about the model installed in the boat.Have I somehow wrecked the tach by dialing various settings? Is there a way to check the tach? Is replacing the tach as simple (or complicated) as it seems to be? If it is a gasoline engine the tach lead should come from the distributor.
TomThis is most likely the make of your tach.No, you didn't hurt anything by playing with the dip switches, all they change is the tach #s. If you have a diesel engine, the tach input comes from the alternator.Check the wire connections before you spend $ to replace the tach, at both ends. Also check the grounds and all the connections at the cockpit panel.Go to Teleflex website , they have a page of settings. Maybe also use the Forum Archive search here on Teleflex, it's been discussed before.Find out how many poles on your alternator and then set as recommended by Teleflex. If you don't know, run the engine at max in neutral, should be around 3000 if you have a Universal engine. Then cruising rpms should be around 2500 to 2700. It's not an exact science. Stu
