Rented the video quot;Visitorsquot; this past weekend. It is half horror/ half suspense about a woman sailing her Beneteau 38 around the world alone. Produced in 2003. Some pretty good sailing scenes, but as with many sailing movies, it might make you not want to go sailing.
It's on cable this Saturday @ 1:00 PM-- quot;Television for Womenquot; channel.
Dead Calm and Wind are two good sailing movies. If you haven't seen them I would reccomend them both!
Ironicially, we just ran across this in the quot;bargain binquot; at Wal-Mart for about $6, it looked interesting, so we bought it. I'd say it's really more a movie of a woman's introspection about her relationship with her parents than it was a sailing movie. However, I found that the stuff that WAS about sailing to be refreshingly accurate. It seems that frequently the things depected on a movie that involves a sailboat just aren't accurate, or are too totally contrived. this one fit very nicely all around.I did notice that the jacket said it was a 44 foot boat, and it was referred to in the movie as a 38.
quot;Capt. Ronquot; is a very entertaining movie. It wasn't meant to be instructional I am sure, but the docking technique is copied in theSan Juans every summer!
was on TBS (or was it TNT) this weekend before the football games. A couple of wooden sail boats and a pretty good story.Mark
Check out quot;Knife in the Waterquot;, Roman Polanski's first film. Though it was done in the early 60s in Poland on a shoestring budget, it is an interesting psychological study and features some nice sailing scenes. It received wide critical acclaim and is still considered a classic. See if you can catch the slip-up when the skipper first rigs the boat.
That Polanski film has got to be one of the strangest I've ever seen. Kind of eerie. But take Captain Ron. He's my mentor!
Total Chick Flick, stupid ending as well. Kelly's Heros has a sailboat in it and is a much better movie. Same for Romancing the Stone.
Pushed rewind after 20 minutes and back to Blockbuster tomorrow for something better.
I found another sailing movie while browsing through the video store in persuit of a couple of movies mentioned in this thread. White Squall- it is based on a true story and I thought it was very entertaining. Thanks everyone for the movie suggestions. I've really enjoyed watching them.
My wife and kids were watching that movie, and I only caught the end of it, but it has a beautifully maintained Formosa 54 that they show them sailing at the end. I recognized the boat instantly because a friend of mine has one.I'm tempted to watch the entire movie next time it's on just to see if they show any more of the boat.
We have a decent collection of sailing movies that I can recommend. Some though are only availble on VHS, but well worth it as they start to get rare or hard to find.Bob's Recommended List:quot;Dovequot; Robin Lee Graham's 1966-1970 Around the World Solo Voyage. Joseph Bottom's plays Graham. Great Sailing Scenes. The ports of call, and ocean sailing in all weather was great. VHS (Amazon.com)quot;Coasterquot; The building (in a Maine yard) and the true story of the Schooner, quot;John F. Leavitt, her maiden voyage and tragic end on the way to Haiti (70's). Excellent large woodenboat building (from laid keel to launch) documentary, introduction to a large and beautiful Schooner, personal stories of crew, great sailing scenes, etc.(Mystic Seaport Store).quot;Windquot; America's Cup comeback. I know most of you have seen this one. Excellent heart pounding racing movie. I found a copy of a DVD on Amazon. Com. quot;Captain Bloodquot; Black and White - Errol Flynnquot;Mutiny on the Bountyquot; Mel Gibsonquot iratesquot; Walter Matheau (sp)RegardsBob
Captain Ron is very entertaining, especially the sleeping scene with the eye-patch.
Hey Brian! That Formosa 51 at the end of 50 First Dates is the actual boat I used to own. A sistership was the boat in Captain Ron (I gotta tell you, the engine room doesn't have a staircase like in the movie!) An interesting tidbit I learned is that the film company producing 50 First Dates reportedly chartered it from Seattle and hired a crew which motored it HARD up to Alaska for the final scene. Apparently they ran the engine so hard it needed something like $10k worth of repairs, and they taped over the green sheer stripe to match the boat seen earlier in the movie in Hawaii, damaging the paint job. The guy I sold the boat to now has a rebuilt engine and a new paint job! Trevor
...were William Garden designed yachts and both were built in Europe. There were two of them used in the movie; one was made to look like a real pig and the other was pristine. The pristine one is called quot;Ladyhawkequot; and last known whereabouts was Texas and the other is unknown. Both boats were rented from the owners by Buena Vista Pictures (Walt Disney) for the film. How do I know this? I e-mailed Walt Disney Pictures and asked. They actually replied.Cheers,Bob
Dead Calm with San Neil and Nicole Kidman was a pretty good film with 90% shot on the water. The sailboat used was a 70 ft (+/-) plywood made boat originally from South Africa and now running out of Sydney Harbour in Oz.Apparently they shot the entire film in the calm waters between the Great Barrier Reef and the Mainland.Good film.
I believe this has been asked before in this forum, but don't recall. Anyone know what the cute little ketch Elvis was sailing in this flick?? (or was it a yawl?)

I asked that question 2 to 3 weeks ago. Got no answer. By the way, it's a sloop.Bryon |
